Born in London on November 28, 1757, into the family of a hosier. Having no formal education, he was apprenticed to an engraver, James Basire. There were almost no outward events in his life. He was not a professional poet or man of letters, but earned his living, sometimes very precariously, as an engraver. Insofar as he had any public reputation during his lifetime, it was as a failed, eccentric painter. But some of his lyrics were known and admired by Coleridge and other literary men.
